Collected Works Bookstore presents BOOKS AT THE MARKET, a series of author events at the Santa Fe Farmers Market This week, meet Katherine Leiner, author of the new book Growing Roots: The New Generation of Sustainable Farmers, Cooks, and Food Activists Stories and Recipes Growing Roots is about a new revolution in food that involves young people who are living sustainable lives that revolve around healthy, natural food. The book introduces us to farmers and beekeepers, fishermen and chefs, food activists and cheesemongers, and many, many more. We meet these fascinating young people from all across the nation through first-person profiles, along with brilliant photographs and delicious, simple recipes. They talk about raising grass-fed beef, lamb, and pork; growing vegetables and grains; keeping bees and making cheese; and their restaurants and their markets. Included are filmmakers, writers, and artists who change the way we look at what we eat and where our food comes from. In their profiles we learn how these young people got to where they are today, their backgrounds, their education, and their passionate relationship to food. The author’s through-line gives us a glimpse of her own journey with food, through her own childhood, raising children, and becoming an empty-nester. Growing Roots is about relationships and how food figures in those relationships. It is for everyone who is interested in learning about this new iteration of the food movement and the folks involved, whether you’d like to figure out how to do it for yourself, or just love reading about it. The photos are beautiful, the narrative lively, and the recipes simple and delicious. A must-read for all ages and a wonderful addition to the food-lover’s bookshelf. This event is at the SANTA FE FARMERS MARKET. For directions and info about the market, see www.santafefarmersmarket.com

Acclaimed author Joseph M. Marshall III will read from his latest release, To You We Shall Return: Lessons About Our Planet from the Lakota. “Grandmother, you who listen and hear all, you from whom all good things come…It is your embrace we feel when we return to you…”  This traditional Lakota prayer to Grandmother Earth opens Joseph Marshall III's newest work, a meditation on our connection to the land and an exhortation to respect it. Using a combination of personal anecdote, detailed history, and Lakota tales, Marshall takes us back to his childhood and shows us how we, too, can learn to love our planet. Although he was educated in Euro-American schools, Marshall had the benefit of growing up with wise grandparents who taught him never to walk a path without knowing the trail from which he'd come: that the bow does not make the hunter, and above all, that the earth can be boundlessly generous-if we can learn to accept its gifts. Joseph M. Marshall III was born on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota and raised by his maternal grand parents. He is an historian, educator, motivational speaker, and Lakota craftsmen and has worked as both technical advisor and actor in television movies, including Return to Lonesome Dove. His most recent role was playing Loved by Buffalo in the Turner Network Television miniseries Into the West. A recipient of the Wyoming Humanities Award, he is the author of numerous collections of essays and short stories.
