Carol Anthony: Painting 1975-2015 Artist Reception and book signing

Friday, November 17, 2017 - 4:00pm

As the first full-length survey of Carol Anthony’s career, this richly illustrated book is a striking collection of the artist’s intimate paintings, drawings and prints.Through her distinctive renderings, Anthony directs her audience’s attention towards the small and unassuming aspects of everyday life, be it a weathered tennis ball, a dog bone, or an unopened envelope. Though her subject matter may appear mundane at first glance, the artist’s work pulses with an undercurrent of powerful emotion and memory. Anthony’s painted suitcases, postcards and window casings offer access to a deeply personal realm, inviting viewers to inhabit these inner landscapes by her side. Her atmospheric paintings convey a reverence for the earth, a yearning for the past, and a deep appreciation for beauty. While possessing a certain tenderness, Anthony’s vaporous fields and succulent bowls of fruit evoke potent feelings of melancholy, nostalgia and solitude.

A 1966 graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Carol Anthony works with a wide variety of medium ranging from papier-mache to oil crayon and monotype printing. Anthony’s work can be found in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the Carnegie Institute and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Her paintings and prints have been featured in galleries across the nation, including the Maxwell Davidson Gallery (New York City), the Frye Art Museum (Seattle, Washington) and the Gerald Peters Gallery (Santa Fe, New Mexico), among many others.
